Empty

That describes how we feel. We have been with Michael day after day now for 7 months. We felt like our constant love and support would help him heal and come back, but its just not enough. He needs a facility that understands brain injury and is equipped to handle explosive behavior at times without harming him. That has already been done to him. He needs room to roam and physical activity such as a gym or rec room to let off steam when he becomes confused and angry. If anyone reading this knows of a facility like this, no matter where it is please let us know. We are at our wits end and very exhausted. In fact, I'm driving home tomorrow with Jordan and our dogs. I need to regroup and spend time with my other family members and let the pros handle Michael. Mike and I have both agreed that it is time to detach and let go. If we keep going at this pace, it will kill us. I feel defeated and like I'm turning my back on Michael, but I don't know what else to do. Post by Mom

  1. Rosi, you both have been so amazing throughout all of this and I can't imagine being in your shoes. I can understand how it would feel like you're turning your back, but you're not. You can't be what he needs if you are too run down & exhausted in every way. He'll understand that someday. I pray for you guys all the time and my heart is with you. Love you, and wish I knew of a place to recommend to you. Take care of yourself and know lots of people love you.

  2. Michael looks like such a joyful guy. I'm very sorry that you are going through this ordeal, and my only hope is that you all remain strong and press forward. I'm sending good vibes your way.

  3. Scott contacted one of his Duke classmates about possible rehab facilities. His friend has a specialty in neurological PT and recommended Brooks in Jacksonville, FL. He said they have a good behavioral program for brain trauma patients. he also suggested RIC in Chicago, Kessler in NJ, Moss in Philadelphia and USC in LA. I pray you have already found a place that is appropriate for Michael's needs but if any of this will help let us know and we will try to get contact people for you. Your family is always in our thoughts and prayers. Love to all of you, Barbara Kaylor

  4. 7 months . . . I can't even imagine how exhausting this has been (and continues to be) for you. Please know that you are in my prayers, and I'll do what I can to help as well.

  5. One breath at a time. That's all you can do. You must breathe for you. Though that might seem harsh and hard at times.

Sometimes it's the detaching that allows for things to come. Kinda like when one lets go of a raft and just floats in the waves.

You'll be guided just fine. Breathe and seek the comfort you need for you. :-)

    Peace.

  8. You are an incredible mother and do not think for even a moment that you are turning your back on Mike. You need only to look at these wonderful pictures of him and remember that YOU allowed these wonderful times to happen. Sometimes love works in strange ways and right now, the love you can give is through professional help. I am confident that you will find the help that your beautiful son needs.

  12. I'm so sorry to hear of what you're going through. Although I'm not sure that they have a facility themselves, you might want to contact the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential, based in Philadelphia, PA: http://iahp.org/Les-Instituts-pour-la-R.7+M54a708de802.0.html. They have people at the forefront of brain research; I happen to be one of their success stories.

I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Your love for Michael is palpable. May you be filled with strength and peace as you continue to seek what's best for your son.

  13. It seems you have been a wonderful support system for Michael and I only hope that I have people like you in my life if anything unfortunate ever happens to me. You are strong people, loving people and honest people...what more can one hope to be or hope to have in their life.

You need to take care of yourselves through this process. If you arent healthy and grounded during this time, how can anyone expect you to be of any help to Michael. Take time for yourselves and make sure you love yourselves the way you love him. I have a feeling he would want you to...

Just know there are so very many people rooting for you and supporting you from many, many miles away. Im sending you positive thoughts, energy and hope for the future!!!

  15. So very sorry to hear about what you and Michael are going through. Please know that you are not alone and in the most difficult moments, you are surrounded by love and prayers. I am not sure how feasible it would be for you, but many years ago, I worked on the Neuro-Psych/ Head Trauma unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Perhaps they could help you with some direction. Thinking of you with love from England.

I want you to know that each of you are loved by so many and that even though some days that probably just doesn't seem like enough-it will be. Rest, rejuvenate, care for each other and pray for peace. Keeping you in my prayers as well.

The support and love you have shown and will continue to show will reap benefits, but it's OK to be worn out dejected; just know there are people pulling for you guys and praying for your family (Michael included obviously!) - hopefully these and other gestures will help you "recharge" fully and quickly. Here's to finding the strength to stay strong!

I can't imagine the emotional strain that you must be under, but please remember that you can't give all of yourself away, even to your kids. You will be a better caretaker of Michael because you are taking the time to take care of yourself.

But you're no good to yourselves or to him if you're burned out, stressed, exhausted. Take care of your selves, breathe, and let things unfold ... Best wishes from Canada.

A friend of mine has a son (named Michael, oddly) who just suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury and they fought like heck to get him to Baylor Rehab in Dallas. They are very pleased with his therapy and progress.

  42. BREATHE!!! By taking some time to step away, you are actually allowing yourselves to become stronger so that you will be able to continue supporting Michael. It's OK to renew your spirit, so that YOU can go on. Give yourself permission to take a little break. Moms are the worst at doing that. It doesn't mean you will forget about your son; you will pray, you will hope, you will get stronger... all for him!! Believe in the power of God, though i am sure your faith has been shaken by this. Hope is the mainstay... don't ever let it go!! Peace to you all!

While they focus on children and adolescents, someone there may be able to point you to a TBI program for adults. 56. A dear friend, just last week, spoke to me in words that I had said to her many years ago when she and her family were going through a very rough time...She said, "Didn't you tell me that I must take care of myself first or I won't be able to care for anyone else? And to fill up your own "spiritual account" or you won't be able to make anymore "withdrawals"... Weren't those your words?" I had to admit that they were. So I now say, may your spiritual account be filled today with the love and prayers of the many who are sending you "deposits" of caring. May they guide you and abide with you each day...one day at a time. Thinking of you and your family.

(http://almosthomekids.net/) AHK gives respite and transitional care to kids with special medical needs, so it would allow you to take a well-deserved break, if you're in the area. Their main home is in Naperville, IL, with another location coming soon in Chicago.

  75. I have faith you will not allow your family to be defeated by illness or injury. Caring for yourself and your husband is the most important part of caring for your Son, without you he has no one to lead him back to the light.

Brain injury's are hard to deal with as a family, because sometimes they are a different person once they return from the brink. Therapy or a Support Group may help immensely.

Please try to take care of yourself and know that it's okay to do so (think of that axiom of putting on your own oxygen mask -- one needs to do that to be able to help others).

Also, please know that you have lots of people who are praying for Michael and your family during this trying time. I wish I had some knowledge of a facility or something.

  77. I started reading your blog from the beginning. What a journey of love and frustration. Through it all you have been so strong. It is time that you take some time to refresh and rejuvenate. In Beth Moore's "Loving Well" she reminds us that loving well means drinking deeply from the Loving Well. It is so hard to do that when you are constantly tired and overwhelmed with the day to day grind of shouldering a burden like this. You need to take time to drink deeply of the Loving Well, so take time to be with Him. Let Him fill you with His love, know that you and your family are precious to Him. Jesus is holding you all in the hollow of His hand, no matter how it may feel right now, for you are His beloved. Rest in Him, drink deeply of His love, and soak in the prayers and best wishes that are being sent your way today. I pray that our Father will give you peace and comfort, rest and strength, and the desire of your heart. I pray for Michael's complete recovery and for the right place to open for his care. In His love, Judy

  101. It's devastating to hear what has happened to your son and, in turn, your family. Still, I believe there is hope for all of you. Though I don't know of a good facility that could meet Michael's needs, I feel sure that soon one where your son can be cared for properly will be found. I will say a prayer for you and your family. Remember that many are rooting for all of you: friends, family, and even strangers. You are loved.

  102. As so many have already said, you can't take care of Michael if you don't take care of yourself. You are all in our hearts and thoughts as you go through this tumultuous time. Remember to breathe and hold on to the love that surrounds you.

  103. You and your family are so strong to have stayed by his side and support him. Just because you leave for a little bit to regroup yourself does not mean that you are being selfish or turning your backs on him. You have all the prayers and support from strangers, including myself. I hope for all the best for all of you.

It might not be enough, but even if he has everything else, without his family there to help him, he's gonna struggle. It feels hopeless, but he needs you now more than ever.

I can understand the need to put some distance there, and I realize in order to look after him, you gotta take care of yourself as well. But, please don't give up on him entirely. No matter what, please don't give up hope.

I'll be praying for you and your family <3

  112. I can't imagine going through something like this as a mom, as a friend, sister, or brother. I can't fathom the pain that comes from hope being shattered again and again.

What's been said above is exactly right though, you can't help him if you don't first help yourself. You can't love him, if you don't love yourselves first.

He'll get through this, from the sounds of it, there are few out there as strong as he is...

Praying and thinking of your family, and wishing you all the luck with a new facility.

PS- NEVER feel guilty for taking a breather and regrouping. <3

  113. As a mom currently dealing with a grown son with mental health issues, I understand the constant need to support and then retreat. We can only do so much. Then we must pull back and regroup for our own mental health. Our issues are not nearly as devastating as yours however and you have my utmost respect for all you are doing for Michael.

I am sending healing vibes your way and hope that Michael heals and returns to his former self. Hang in there.

    ReplyDelete
  114. My heart goes out to your family and to your Michael. I am so sorry you are all going through such a scary time in your lives, and I hope and pray that Michael is able to recover and live a happy and healthy life that he deserves. Please take care of yourselves. <3

    ReplyDelete
  115. I will keep you in my thoughts and will be hoping for great recovery for Michael. You have worked so hard to get him this far, with your help he will recover as much as he is able.

Please make sure you take time for yourselves as well. You need to be strong and healthy for the rest of this journey. Take time to go on a date, have a massage, or even a really good sleep-in. Whatever you need to recharge your batteries.

You have great resources and therapies available to you and I am sure you will take full advantage of them. Please also consider some alternative treatments (naturopath, accupuncture, etc.) as they may be able to provide some relief for some of Michael's symptoms. Recently I have suffered a (comparatively) minor brain injury and found that the treatments I received greatly helped my recovery. These treatments provided me with relief from some symptoms and allowed me to feel more like my old self again, which has relieved some of my anxiety surrounding my injury and in turn, helped me to heal. Even if you don't believe in these treatments they can only help. If the only benifit you see is some relaxation and stress reduction it could be helpful to Michael.

I will keep you in my thoughts.

I thinking some detaiching is necessary: you need to be strong and in order to do so, you need time to rest and be calm. 120. Do not lose your inward peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset. --- Saint Francis De Sales

This sounds like an incredibly difficult time, but all you can do is the best that YOU can do; even if if means taking a step back to compose yourself. There's nothing wrong with that, and you shouldn't feel guilty about it. You can only give Michael your best if you are at your best. I believe that with love, anything is possible. I'm sure you'll find a place that will understand his injury and treat him with the love and respect he deserves; after all...his outbursts aren't his fault. It must be really scary for him to be so confused. I hope that you and your family have all of the love and support you need. All of you. Sending good vibes your way:) Peace and love.

  121. I work at a dayhab, where we assist adults with disabilities. The people we work with have myriad different issues. We help them learn to read, write, learn math skills, exercise and healthy eating, and most importantly, how to control behavioral outbursts. I do not know if that is what you are looking for, for Michael. We are CPR and First Aid certified. We take classes in delegated nursing also. Just a thought.

I'm not sure where you live, and how it is set up, but if you were to contact your county board they would be able to point you in the right direction.

I understand completely how hard it is to help someone like Michael and how frustrating it can be for all of you. Don't give up hope. And never feel guilt because you are doing the best you can with what you have. I hope you find help for him so that he can get back to his life.

  128. I just wanted to send some love and encouragement to your family. I have and will pray for Michael and all of you. Michael seems like such a strong person, so does your entire family. My family recently watched my youngest brother who just turned nineteen go into full psychosis, its difficult and heartbreaking to watch such a strong person go through weak times of confusion and pain, but he came out of it, thank you Jesus! We take it a day at a time now. Please know that the strong, witty Michael that you once knew is still there and still very much loves you :) I pray for peace and healing for you all. Even though it seems so very difficult right now, the Lord loves you, he really does, and he really loves Michael, and I thank him for designing each one of you to uniquely love and support one another in your strong family. God bless you all :)

  129. I hope some of these kind words have helped you. I do keep thinking that you might consider contacting a reporter...they might get the word out in such a way that you could find a facility that fits better.
You know those friends who've said to you "let us know what we can do to help"? Ask them to do this...contact reporters, congress people, the AMA, churches, anybody they can think of. But let THEM do it while you rest and re-group.

  174. I watched an amazing movie last night called Soul Surfer. A young woman lost her arm in a shark attack, and was having a hard time dealing with the situation. She talks with a friend about needing a new perspective, that she's (literally) too close to the situation. Take your time at home and know you need that break, that sometimes being too close to the situation can make us lose sight of the positives in life. I will be praying that Michael finds peace and a place that will be a perfect match for hi,
